Bedford, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia, January 23, 2008 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that it ranked number 42 on FORTUNE's 2008 list of "100 Best Companies to Work For." The designation marks MITRE's seventh consecutive year on the magazine's annual list and represents a jump from number 60 in 2007. Among medium-sized companies, MITRE ranked 13. The company was also named number six out of the top ten businesses for encouraging employee work/life balance.

"Over the years, we have come to realize that our ranking in a given year is less important than what our inclusion on the list symbolizes—that MITRE is recognized as a company that is concerned about its employees and their work environment," said Alfred Grasso, MITRE's president and chief executive officer.

The annual ranking process is highly competitive. Out of the 1,500 companies initially considered for the 2008 award, less than a third—406—were chosen for an in-depth evaluation. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the responses of 400 randomly selected employees to a 57-question survey. The remaining one-third is based on an assessment of the company's demographics, compensation and benefit programs, and culture. The full list and related stories appear in the February 4 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands January 28 and at www.fortune.com as of January 22.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va. Established in 1958, MITRE is celebrating 50 years of public service.
