McLean, Virginia, July 8, 2008 — MITRE chairman of the board Dr. James Schlesinger and president and chief executive officer Mr. Alfred Grasso are pleased to announce the recent appointment of Admiral Edmund P. Giambastiani, Jr., U.S. Navy (Ret.), to the MITRE Board of Trustees.

"It is an honor to welcome such a distinguished military leader to the Board," said Mr. Grasso. "Admiral Giambastiani's expertise and counsel will uniquely benefit MITRE, its customers, and the military service members we support through our work."

Prior to his retirement in October 2007, Admiral Giambastiani served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation's second highest ranking military officer. In this position, he chaired the Joint Requirements Oversight Council, co-chaired the Defense Acquisition Board, and served as a member of the National Security Council Deputies Committee, the Nuclear Weapons Council, and the Missile Defense Executive Board. His previous command positions included service as NATO's first Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and as Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command.

During his military service, Admiral Giambastiani was responsible for demanding at-sea operations and the development of new technologies and experimental processes. He commanded a nuclear-powered deep-research submarine, a fast-attack submarine, and the Atlantic submarine fleet. He also led Submarine Development Squadron 12, an operational submarine squadron that serves as the Navy's Warfare Center of Excellence for submarine doctrine and tactics.

During his career, Admiral Giambastiani received numerous decorations, including 19 unit awards and commendations. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with leadership distinction in 1970.
