MITRE Engineer Elected President of IEEE Computer Society FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, February 8, 2008 — Ms. Susan (Kathy) Land, principal software systems engineer in the Information and Computing Technologies Technical Center of The MITRE Corporation, has been elected president of the IEEE Computer Society. IEEE, formerly the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. The non-profit organization has more than 370,000 members and 39 societies. The Computer Society is dedicated to advancing the theory, practice, and application of computer and information processing technology. With nearly 90,000 members, it is IEEE’s largest society. Land, who joined MITRE in June, spent the past year as the first vice president of the Computer Society. She has also been a member of the organization's Board of Governors and received the 2007 IEEE Standards Association Standards Medallion. She brings to her new volunteer role 20 years of information technology experience, including information management systems programming, database systems development, and enterprise application programming. Her fourth book on implementing software process improvement will be published shortly. "Kathy is a recognized expert in the field of software engineering standards," said Mr. Alfred Grasso, MITRE's president and chief executive officer. "MITRE and the Computer Society are fortunate to have her on board. Both will benefit from her leadership and creative thinking." Land's plans for the Computer Society include a focus on membership—supporting current members and expanding the ranks. She also wants to improve its business structure and finances and continue to push for international technology standards. She will serve for a year as president-elect before beginning her term in 2009. The election results were announced in the December issue of Computer Magazine. A member of MITRE's Huntsville, Alabama, office, Land works primarily with the Missile Defense Agency's National Team to develop architecture, requirements, and standards. Her work is part of the federally funded research and development center MITRE operates for the Department of Defense. Prior to joining the company, Land was a program manager and Information Technology Technical Fellow at Northrop Grumman. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
