Bedford, Massachusetts, July 8, 2008 — The MITRE Corporation's site in Hanover, Md., has received the Defense Security Service's (DSS) 2008 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award. Established in 1966 in honor of Air Force Colonel James S. Cogswell, the first chief of industrial security for the U.S. Department of Defense, the award recognizes overall excellence in maintaining a classified environment. Only 23 of the nation's 12,000 defense contractors subject to annual inspection were presented with this year's award.

"Our customers rely on us to safeguard sensitive information," said Al Grasso, MITRE's president and chief executive officer. "Receiving the Cogswell Award confirms that we are meeting—and exceeding—their security expectations. Our security staff continue to demonstrate exemplary performance."

The selection process for the Cogswell Award is highly competitive. DSS Industrial Security Representatives nominate facilities that receive at least two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings and demonstrate innovation in their security program management and oversight. Criteria include "maintaining a security program that far exceeds the basic National Industrial Security Program requirements and providing leadership to other cleared facilities in establishing best practices while maintaining the highest standards for security."

Nominees are reviewed and ranked by a national team; DSS, an agency of the Department of Defense, selects the winners. MITRE was also a 1994 award recipient.

Tony Salvucci, manager of corporate security for MITRE, Rob Case, program director, Carolyn Hyatt, business analyst and administrative lead at the Ft. Meade facility, Martha Horton, business opportunities manager and integrator, Jay Thomas, senior corporate security specialist, and Aprille Abbott, corporate security specialist, accepted the award at the National Classification Management Society (NCMS) annual training seminar on June 18 in Mashantucket, Conn. NCMS, also known as the Society of Industrial Security Professionals, was founded in 1964 to advance the practice of classification management as a profession.
