MITRE Employees Receive National Women of Color Technology Awards FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, November 24, 2008 — Five MITRE employees were recognized for their leadership and accomplishments in the technology field at the 13th annual National Women of Color STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Conference held in Dallas, Texas, from October 23-25. Belinda Edwards, Pearl Khuo, Gabriela Marani, and Annette Pence were named 2008 Technology All Stars. Michèle Causey was named a Technology Rising Star. "These five women represent the best in their fields," said Lisa R. Bender, vice president and chief human resources officer at MITRE. "Their respective—and collective—achievements demonstrate how our diverse workforce helps our sponsors solve complex issues facing the nation." Belinda Edwards A lead information systems engineer, Edwards currently supports the All-Source Intelligence Environment—a web-based environment where analysts, warfighters, and decision makers can rapidly access and employ intelligence information. She joined MITRE in 2004, following 13 years in the commercial and government sectors, including seven years as an IT specialist for IBM Global Services. With support from MITRE's Educational Assistance Program, Edwards is pursuing her master's degree in computer systems management, with a focus on software development management, from the University of Maryland University College. She holds a bachelor's degree from the Indiana Institute of Technology. Pearl Khuo Khuo serves as the lead domain operations analyst for program management support to the National Consortium for Measurement and Signature Intelligence (MASINT) Research. She and her team augment the work of the Defense Intelligence Agency Chief Scientist for the National MASINT Management Office in managing multiple research and development projects supporting national security. Khuo came to MITRE in 2006, following more than 12 years as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force. She currently serves in the USAF Reserves. She holds a master's degree in nonfiction writing from The Johns Hopkins University. Khuo was a member of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Virginia, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Asian studies and a bachelor's degree in psychology. Gabriela Marani Marani is a lead simulation modeling engineer in MITRE's Airspace and Airport Analysis department. She has led numerous experiments at MITRE's Air Traffic Management Laboratory in support of the Federal Aviation Administration's work to improve the efficiency and safety of the national airspace. As part of her work, she conducts extensive analytical airspace studies, including the airspace redesign effort of the Bay to Basin area on the west coast. Prior to joining MITRE in 2001, she was a National Research Council Resident Research Associate at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Marani holds a doctorate in computational sciences and informatics and a master's degree in applied and engineering physics from George Mason University and a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Buenos Aires. Annette Pence Pence has more than 30 years of experience implementing information technology-enabling solutions supporting aerospace, logistics, human resources, financial, and command and control classified operations. As a data management department head, she provides technical guidance and oversight of government agency data architectures and helps develop long-range plans for overall data management strategies for MITRE's government customers, including the Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the HHS Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. Pence was previously vice president of Science Applications International Corporation's (SAIC) data management services division and department manager of software integration at Boeing Information Services. With MITRE since 2003, she holds a master's degree in technology management from George Mason University. Michèle Causey A lead economic and business analyst, Causey provides project management and earned value management support to help government clients acquire, develop, and deliver effective IT solutions. She currently supports the HHS Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Causey joined MITRE in 2005. She was previously a program management analyst with SAIC. Causey graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's (UNC-CH) OneMBA program, a global executive MBA program designed by five schools on four continents. She holds dual bachelor's degrees in political science and romance languages from UNC-CH.
