Gallagher BEDFORD, Mass., and MCLEAN, Va., December 1, 2009 — The MITRE Corporation's President and CEO, Alfred Grasso, has announced the appointment of Joel Jacobs to CIO and vice president. Jacobs will assume the role vacated by Robert Mikelskas, Ph.D., vice president and current CIO, who will retire in January 2010. Jacobs had been deputy CIO since 2003. As CIO, Jacobs will lead MITRE's Center for Information and Technology, the organization providing comprehensive and sustainable information technology, corporate communications, knowledge management, and enterprise architecture services to the corporation. Jacobs will be responsible for advancing IT resources, including technology adoption, infrastructure, and the use of information technologies throughout MITRE. "We know he'll continue to enhance and expand our award-winning capabilities." Jacobs has more than 28 years of experience working both at MITRE and in industry on complex information technology topics. Since joining MITRE in 1981, he has held positions with steadily increasing levels of responsibility, managing internal information systems development efforts and directing a variety of network, security, and software engineering and research projects. He served as director of the MITRE Software Center, as department head of Advanced Information Systems Technology, as a principal investigator in information systems research, and as executive director of Information Technology and Services. He also led several projects in which the government adopted commercial open systems standards, including the first large-scale purchase of commercial Internet Protocol components. In 1996, Jacobs left MITRE to serve as vice president at Concept Five Technologies, a software and professional services company. In 1998, he joined Onsett International Corporation, an IT management consulting firm, as practice director of Technology and Security and later served as the company's president and CEO. He rejoined MITRE in 2003. Mikelskas, who joined MITRE in 1972, has managed and contributed technically to a wide variety of programs for the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, and the Intelligence Community. As vice president for MITRE's Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems from 2001 through 2007, he was responsible for developing the strategy for the center and overseeing the execution of programs in advanced intelligence and information systems. He became CIO in 2007. "Bob's lifelong commitment to service in our nation's interest is most impressive and appreciated by the sponsors that he has served and all of us at MITRE," said Grasso.
