MITRE Receives Department of Homeland Security Award for the Systems Engineering and Development Institute FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher BEDFORD, Mass., and MCLEAN, Va., March 11, 2009 — The MITRE Corporation has received the award for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Systems Engineering and Development Institute (SEDI™), a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC). The SEDI FFRDC will provide systems engineering expertise and acquisition strategy advice to major programs to improve enterprise policies, processes, and tools to more efficiently and effectively deliver mission capabilities to ensure the nation's security. "This news is extremely gratifying," said Alfred Grasso, MITRE president and chief executive officer. "The SEDI, which was competitively awarded, offers new opportunities for MITRE to continue our efforts in support of national security and to work in partnership with DHS to ensure the success of their mission and goals." MITRE has supported the agencies that now comprise the DHS for many years. Last year, the company established the Homeland Security Center to strengthen the coordination of work across DHS and to provide systems engineering support to key programs and major initiatives. The MITRE Corporation (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. In addition to the Department of Homeland Security's SEDI, it also operates three other federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Veterans Affairs, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
