Dr. Donald M. Kerr and Ms. Cathy E. Minehan Elected to MITRE's Board of Trustees FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher BEDFORD, Mass., and MCLEAN, Va., July 10, 2009 — MITRE Chairman of the Board Dr. James Schlesinger and President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Alfred Grasso are pleased to announce the recent appointment of Dr. Donald M. Kerr and Ms. Cathy E. Minehan to the MITRE Board of Trustees. "We are honored that Dr. Kerr and Ms. Minehan have joined MITRE's Board of Trustees," said Mr. Grasso. "Their respective expertise—garnered during notable careers in the intelligence community and the financial sector—will further strengthen our capacity to support our government sponsors." Dr. Kerr, who has had a long and distinguished career in government and private industry, most recently served as Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence. From 2005 to 2007, he was the director of the National Reconnaissance Office and served as the Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force for Intelligence Space Technology. He served as Deputy Director for Science and Technology at the CIA from 2001 to 2005 and was an assistant director of the FBI in charge of the Laboratory Division from 1997 to 2001. From 1979 to 1985, Dr. Kerr served as the fourth director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Earlier in his career, he conducted and led LANL research in high altitude weapons effects, nuclear test detection and analysis, weapons diagnostics, ionospheric physics, and alternative energy programs. He held several executive positions in the private sector, including executive vice president and director at Information Systems Laboratories, Inc., corporate executive vice president and director at Science Applications International Corporation, and president and director of EG&G, Inc. A fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Kerr has published frequently on nuclear weapons efforts, national security and arms control, energy technology, and ionospheric research. He has received several awards for his public service, including the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal and the CIA Distinguished Intelligence Medal. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, a master’s degree in microwave electronics, and a doctorate in plasma physics and microwave electronics from Cornell University. Ms. Minehan is managing director of Arlington Advisory Partners, LLC, in Boston, and is a member of the boards of directors of VISA, Inc., and Becton, Dickinson and Company. She has taught at Northeastern University's School of Social Science, Urban Affairs & Public Policy. Ms. Minehan retired in 2007 after 13 years as president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, one of 12 regional Reserve Banks that together with the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., form the Federal Reserve System. In total, she served 39 years in the Federal Reserve System, including positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and on the staff of the Board of Governors in D.C. While president and CEO of the Boston Fed, Ms. Minehan served on the Federal Open Market Committee, the body responsible for U.S. monetary policy. She also chaired the Financial Services Policy Committee, a body that oversees the provision of Reserve Bank payment services, and played key roles in the System's planning for, or response to, Y2K, interstate banking legislation, and 9/ll. She is a recognized expert in payment systems, a main responsibility of the Federal Reserve System. Ms. Minehan is active in non-profit charitable entities. Among other activities, she chairs the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Governor's Council of Economic Advisors. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she holds an MBA from New York University. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester and is currently chair of the executive committee of the university's Board of Trustees. She has received numerous civic awards and honorary degrees.
