Lillian Zarrelli Ryals Elected to Women in Aerospace Board FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher MCLEAN, Va., November 19, 2009 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that Lillian Zarrelli Ryals has been elected to serve on the board of directors of Women in Aerospace, or WIA (www.womeninaerospace.org), for a three-year term beginning on January 1, 2010. Founded in 1985, WIA is dedicated to expanding women's opportunities for leadership and increasing their visibility in the aerospace community in the U.S. and internationally. The D.C.-based nonprofit organization has more than more 500 individual members—both men and women—as well as more than 25 corporate members, including MITRE. Ryals, who joined MITRE in 1979, is director for System Operations, Safety, and Performance at the Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD), the federally funded research and development center the company operates for the Federal Aviation Administration. She is responsible for MITRE's work in airspace design, performance-based navigation, traffic-flow management operations and procedures, aviation system safety, and performance modeling and simulation of the National Airspace System. Throughout her 30-year career, Ryals has actively supported national and international standards bodies, including the International Civil Aviation Organization and RTCA. She has also served on a number of aviation industry committees, including the FAA Research, Engineering, and Development Advisory Committee Air Traffic Systems Subcommittee, and the American Institute of Aerospace and Aeronautics Digital Avionics Systems Committee. In addition to her technical work, Ryals is dedicated to and actively supports the advancement of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), particularly in the aerospace sector.
