MCLEAN, Va., November 23, 2009 — MITRE Principal Information Systems Engineer Lydia Gizdavcic has been presented with the 2009 Heroines in Technology Award.

The award, jointly given by Women in Technology (WIT) and the March of Dimes, recognizes women and women-run businesses for their exemplary commitment to community service. It was presented at a black-tie gala on November 13 at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston, Va.

"It's an honor just to become a finalist in this rigorous competition," said MITRE Information Systems Engineering Director Dolly Greenwood, a 2007 Heroine in Technology Award winner. "Lydia is a founder of the Evershine Foundation for Education, which supports the Evershine School in Bangalore, India. Her personal effort in the past decade to help transform the school from a kiosk space in a poor part of the city to a modern, two-story multiclass facility is a success that serves as an inspiration to all who would involve themselves in community outreach."

Competing for the award were 16 finalists, including MITRE Associate Department Head Katy Warren. Nominees were considered from all segments of the technology community in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, including government, not-for-profit, and commercial organizations.

"It's a great credit to the quality of our employees that both Lydia and Katy were final contenders," added MITRE President and CEO Al Grasso. "I'd like to personally thank both for their outstanding contributions and congratulate Lydia as a winner and one of this year's Heroines in Technology."

WIT is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to offering women involved in all levels of the technology industry a wide range of professional development and networking opportunities. The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.
