MITRE's New Aberdeen Facility Celebrates Grand Opening FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Jennifer J. Shearman Karina H. Wright BEDFORD, Mass., November 29, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation's Aberdeen site recently marked the official opening of its new facilities in the Northgate Building just outside the entrance to Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). MITRE's work in Aberdeen is conducted as part of the federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) the company operates for the Department of Defense. The new facility unofficially opened in June with 47 employees. More than 37,000 of its planned 55,000 square feet are complete, including accommodations for 75 staff members, a conference center, and laboratory space. Phase II of the project, which will add office space, will be completed in the summer of 2011. MITRE leaders, top U.S. Army officers, and state and local dignitaries, including Christian S. Johansson, Maryland's Secretary of the Department of Business & Economic Development, were on hand for the celebration. The new facility is the permanent home of MITRE's Aberdeen site. The company first established a presence in the area in 2007, when it opened a small office with 40 staff members in Belcamp, Md., in support of MITRE customers relocating from Fort Monmouth, N.J., as part of the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) initiative. Since 2007, the Aberdeen site has continued its support for its longtime customers, including the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development, and Engineering Center (CERDEC); the Program Executive Office for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors; and the Program Executive Office for Command, Control, and Communications Tactical, among others. It also now supports several new customers, including the Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC), Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA), and Army Research Lab (ARL). "Our original site allowed us to transition in a sensible, meaningful way to meet the needs both of our sponsors and our staff, as well as to integrate into the APG community," said site leader Danny DeMarinis, director of strategic initiatives for MITRE's Army Programs Directorate. "The new facility will enable us to build our commitment to serve as a leading member of the technical community." The Aberdeen facility is one of seven MITRE sites in Maryland, including facilities in Baltimore, Ft. Meade, Lexington Park, New Carrollton, Silver Spring, and Suitland. About The MITRE Corporation The MITRE Corporation (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit organization that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Homeland Security, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
