BEDFORD, Mass., September 14, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation has broken ground for a new 105,000 sq. ft. three-story electronics laboratory building on their Bedford campus. The new building will replace MITRE's "E" building on the east side of the campus, which was constructed in the 1950s and can no longer meet the company's operational requirements.

The new lab building, which will connect via enclosed walkways to other buildings on the company's campus, will house 270 staff. It will contain an open and reconfigurable 30,000 sq. ft. lab space as well as collaboration and demonstration spaces. It also will house the company's existing fabrication shop. Additionally, the building will feature a rooftop antenna lab that connects via electrical conduits to the laboratories in the building and an 8,000 sq. ft. external service yard to support work experiments to be conducted outside on mobile units and robotics.

"This new building, the final step in our Bedford campus master plan, will enhance collaboration among our technical staff and enable us to better serve the needs of our customers in the years to come," said Alfred Grasso, MITRE President and CEO.

The building will feature sustainable design concepts and is being built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides a concise framework for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. In 2005, MITRE received a silver LEED rating for its MITRE Center building, the company's "gateway" to the Bedford campus.

Once construction of the new lab building is complete, MITRE will relocate employees from "E" building and demolish that structure, enabling the company to reconfigure parking at the east end of the campus, further maximizing green space along Middlesex Turnpike and improving stormwater management.

Construction of the new lab building is scheduled to continue through the end of November 2011, with demolition of "E" building scheduled for Spring of 2012. The architect for the project is HDR CUH2A and the project manager is Jones Lang LaSalle. John Moriarty Associates is the general contractor and Ron Ostberg, the architect responsible for the Bedford campus master plan, will facilitate laboratory strategy and implementation.
