BEDFORD, Mass., May 11, 2010 — Richard Byrne, vice president within MITRE's Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems, has received the Benjamin H. Oliver Gold Medal for Engineering. This senior-level award was presented to Byrne by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA International) on May 10 at the Joint Warfighting Conference in Virginia Beach, Va.

Established in 1946, AFCEA International is a non-profit membership association serving the military, government, industry, and academia as an ethical forum for advancing professional knowledge and relationships in the fields of communications, IT, intelligence, and global security.

Byrne received the award in honor of his ongoing contributions to the technical Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence (C4I) community and for his hard work and commitment to AFCEA. He was nominated by the Lexington-Concord (Mass.) chapter of AFCEA, where he serves on the Board of Directors. He is an active supporter and participant at Chapter and AFCEA International events, including AFCEA's New Horizons Symposium, and has authored numerous articles for SIGNAL, the organization's international monthly journal.

Byrne's nomination for the award reads in part: "There can be few more notable examples of a leader harnessing corporate and government capabilities to support the war fighter than Rich Byrne. He is as much a pioneer as he is a visionary, and is singularly qualified for and exceptionally worthy of this award."

There is only one recipient of the Benjamin H. Oliver Gold Medal each year. Previous MITRE recipients include Hal Sorenson, who retired in 2001 as senior vice president and general manager; Robert R. Everett, president of MITRE from 1969-1986 and an honorary member of MITRE's Board of Trustees; and Dr. Louis Metzger, senior vice president and corporate chief engineer.
