COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., August 16, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation announces the 50th anniversary of the opening of its Colorado Springs facility. It is the largest MITRE site outside of the company's headquarters locations and employs approximately 180 people, who provide systems engineering and research and development services to various federal government agencies, with a particular emphasis on Department of Defense operations.

"I extend my sincere and heartfelt congratulations to our staff at Colorado Springs as they celebrate 50 years of service to the nation," said MITRE's CEO Alfred Grasso. "Colorado Springs has played a significant role in MITRE's national security work from the earliest days of the company."

MITRE opened its site in Colorado Springs in September 1960 to support the design, development, and testing of systems at the North American Aerospace Defense Command's Combat Operations Center at Cheyenne Mountain. Today, MITRE's Colorado Springs facility serves the North American Aerospace Defense Command, United States Northern Command, the Air Force Space Command, Missile Defense Agency, Electronic Systems Center, and Air Force Academy.

A short ceremony and light reception will be held to celebrate the 50th anniversary. The Commander of Air Force Space Command, General C. Robert "Bob" Kehler and Mayor Lionel Rivera will speak at the ceremony as well as MITRE's Senior Vice Presidents and General Managers Bob Behler and Bob Nesbit. Staff from Congressman Doug Lamborn's office will also attend.
