MITRE's William Albright Honored for Diversity Leadership FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher MCLEAN, Va., February 22, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that William Albright, director of the Quality of Work Life and Diversity division in the company's human resources organization, has received the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) for Diversity Leadership in Industry. Albright, who joined MITRE in 1978, accepted the honor at the 2010 BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference, held in Baltimore from February 18-20. BEYA was established in 1986 as a national awards program to recognize African-Americans who demonstrate excellence in engineering or science and leadership in the workplace and in the community. Albright was recognized for his long-standing commitment to promoting diversity, equality, and recognition of under-represented groups within and outside of MITRE. He was also praised for his formal and informal efforts to mentor young men and women of color to pursue careers and graduate degrees in the STEM disciplines. Specifically, Albright was cited for the three corporate-wide initiatives he established that have helped foster a diverse and inclusive workplace: MITRE's Flexible Work Arrangements Program, which enables employees to achieve work/life balance, whether to pursue education, take care of an elderly parent, or care for a child; the Corporate Diversity Action Council, a management/employee-driven group created to infuse diversity and inclusion into the work environment; and Embrace Your Health, a campaign that provides employees with tools to achieve healthy and active lifestyles, including on-site cholesterol, blood pressure, and bone density screenings, among many others. These programs consistently rate highly in employee satisfaction surveys and have contributed to the company's inclusion on FORTUNE magazine's list of "100 Best Companies to Work For" for the past nine years, as well as several other distinctions. "Bill is most deserving of this award," said Lisa Bender, Ph.D., MITRE vice president and chief human resources officer. "His efforts have made diversity part of MITRE's culture, and his commitment and creativity are big factors behind the development of our award-winning work environment." A decades-long supporter and board member of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science (GEM) and leader of MITRE's GEM Fellows internship program, Albright has also served on the George Mason University Minority Advisory Board and the Fairfax County, Va., Council of the Arts. He received GEM's 2008 Employer of the Year award for his personal and professional efforts to increase diverse representation in the fields of science and engineering. He holds an MBA from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from University of Redlands, Calif.
