Nicholas Donofrio Appointed to MITRE's Board of Trustees FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher BEDFORD, Mass., and MCLEAN, Va., April 2, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation's Chairman of the Board, James Schlesinger, and President and Chief Executive Officer, Alfred Grasso, are pleased to announce the recent appointment of Nicholas Donofrio to MITRE's Board of Trustees. Donofrio, a 44-year IBM veteran, led the company's technology and innovation strategies from 1997 to 2008 as senior vice president of technology and manufacturing and as executive vice president for innovation and technology. In this latter role, he was responsible for the development and retention of IBM's technical staff. Additionally, he served as vice chairman of the IBM International Foundation and chairman of the Board of Governors for the IBM Academy of Technology. From 1964 until his retirement in 2008, Donofrio held numerous technical management and executive positions and led many of IBM's major development and manufacturing teams—from semiconductor and storage technologies, to microprocessors and personal computers, to IBM's entire family of servers. In 2008, he was elected an IBM Fellow, the company's highest technical honor. "Nick's range of expertise and industry knowledge is unparalleled," said Grasso. "We're delighted he's become part of MITRE's board and will help guide the company. His wise counsel will not only benefit MITRE, but all of our government sponsors and customers." A holder of seven U.S. technology patents, Donofrio is a fellow of the UK-based Royal Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the IEEE. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. In 2008, he received the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration's Gold Medal, the first to be presented to a non-U.S. government employee. The same year, Donofrio received the National Security Agency's Director's Memento of Esteem for substantial contributions to the Department of Defense. He was selected one of BusinessWeek's 25 Top Innovation Champions in 2006. IndustryWeek named him Technology Leader of the Year in 2003. An advocate for advancing education, employment, and career opportunities for underrepresented minorities and women, Donofrio served for many years on the board of directors for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering and was board chair from 1997 to 2002. He was a long-time board member of INROADS, a non-profit organization focused on training minority youth for professional careers in business and industry. In 2005, the U.S. Department of Education appointed him to the Commission on the Future of Higher Education, a 20-member delegation of business and university leaders charged with developing a national strategy for post-secondary education to meet the needs of America's diverse population and workforce. He is a senior fellow at the Kauffman Foundation and board co-chair of the New York Hall of Science, the city's only hands-on science and technology center. Donofrio holds a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, respectively. He has received honorary doctorates from Marist College, Pace University, Polytechnic University, the University of Warwick, UK, and the University of Edinburgh, UK.
