MITRE President and CEO Alfred Grasso Appointed to Defense Science Board FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher BEDFORD, Mass., and MCLEAN, Va., February 2, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that President and CEO, Alfred Grasso, has been appointed as a member of the Defense Science Board (DSB), a federal advisory board that plays a vital role in assuring a strong national defense program. Established in 1956 as a standing committee to advise top Pentagon leadership on "the needs and opportunities presented by new scientific knowledge for radically new weapons systems," the DSB today helps develop and strengthen the Department of Defense's (DoD) research and development strategies for the 21st Century. Members of the DSB—leaders in the fields of science, technology, and industry and fields that relate directly to the DoD and military services—provide the secretary, deputy secretary, and under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology, and logistics (AT&L) with independent, expert advice on scientific, technical, manufacturing, acquisition process, and other subjects of special interest to the Department. The group, which currently has 32 members and seven ex officio members, also works closely with the director of defense research and engineering, the principal staff advisor to the under secretary of defense for AT&L and to the secretary and deputy secretary of defense for research and engineering matters. Grasso joined MITRE in 1986 and was appointed president and CEO in 2006. He was previously director of the company's Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence Federally Funded Research and Development Center operated on behalf of the DoD. His earlier roles at MITRE included senior vice president and general manager of the Washington Command, Control, and Communications Center, chief information officer, and technical director for the Battlefield Systems Division at the corporation's Fort Monmouth, N.J., site. "It's an honor to be selected to serve as part of this important organization," said Grasso. "The DSB has a well-earned reputation for proposing innovative solutions to complex and challenging problems, and their work in protecting our nation is in keeping with MITRE's work." In addition to Grasso, the company is represented on the DSB by MITRE Fellow John Betz, Ph.D., who serves as a non-voting member. About The MITRE Corporation The MITRE Corporation (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit organization that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Homeland Security, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
