MITRE's Mark Maybury Named IEEE Fellow FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher BEDFORD, Mass., February 3, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that Mark T. Maybury, Ph.D., has been named a 2010 IEEE Fellow. IEEE is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity. Considered one of the technical community's most prestigious career achievements, the IEEE's grade of Fellow recognizes "unusual distinction and significant contributions to the advancement or application of engineering, science, and technology" with significant value to society. Maybury was specifically cited "for contributions to language processing, broadcast video analysis, and intelligent user interfaces." This year's Fellows class was announced at the December 2009 meeting of the IEEE's Board of Directors. Maybury, who joined MITRE in 1990, is executive director of the company's Information Technology Division. He directs advanced research and development for intelligence and defense systems supporting a broad range of government sponsors, including the U.S. Air Force, Army, and Navy, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the National Science Foundation, and national intelligence agencies. His division also provides research and modernization support to the IRS, FAA, and the Department of State. Maybury leads a team of more than 275 distributed across Washington, D.C., Bedford, Mass., and several U.S. and foreign sites spanning the disciplines of intelligent information systems, analytic tools, performance support, collaborative environments, geospatial information systems, distributed computing, networking, and data, information, and knowledge management. Earlier in his MITRE career, he led the company's Speech and Natural Language Group, served as director of the Artificial Intelligence Technical Center, and headed the Advanced Information Systems Technology Department. "Mark is an incredible asset to the company, our sponsors, and customers," said Alfred Grasso, MITRE president and CEO. "His keen strategic advice and analysis is highly valued within MITRE and throughout the Department of Defense and civilian agencies." A noted cyber expert in artificial intelligence and insider threat, Maybury has contributed to multiple studies of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and the Defense Science Board. From 1995-2002, he co-chaired the Department of Defense's Collaboration Interoperability and Standards Working Group. In 2001, he testified to Congress on State Department modernization. He is a member of the board of directors of the Object Management Group, an international computer industry consortium for enterprise integration standards. He is the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Golden Candle Award for Open Source Intelligence Innovation, a Program Achievement Award for Geospatial News on Demand (GeoNODE), an award from New York City and MITRE for his support of World Trade Center rescue and recovery efforts, a Recognition Award from former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for support to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad, Iraq, and a Special Recognition Award from President George W. Bush for planning for the Terrorism Information Sharing Environment. He was awarded patents for broadcast news understanding and personalcasting and has published in more than 60 refereed publications and editor/author of nine books. He just completed editing Multimedia Information Extraction (2010). Maybury holds a doctorate in artificial intelligence and a master's degree in computer speech and language processing from Cambridge University, England, where he was a Rotary Scholar. He earned an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from College of the Holy Cross, where he was valedictorian.
