MCLEAN, Va., August 10, 2010 — MITRE Senior Principal Software Systems Engineer James W. Moore has been named the recipient of the 2011 IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award. Established in 1979, the annual award is presented by the IEEE and recognizes exceptional contributions to the development and advancement of standards in electrical and electronics engineering. Recipients are selected by the IEEE Awards Board's Technical Field Awards Council.

The award cites Moore "for leadership in support of software and systems engineering standards development, international standards harmonization and standards education." Moore was also the recipient of the IEEE Computer Society's 2009 Hans Karlsson Award, which recognizes contributions and dedication to development or promotion of standards in the computer industry. In 2007, he received the IEEE Standards Association's International Award.

"This well-deserved honor highlights Jim's significant work in advancing the state of the art in software standards," said MITRE Chief Operations Officer David Lehman.

Moore, a MITRE engineer since 1994, serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society and as its vice president of professional activities. He is a Charter Member of the IEEE Computer Society's Golden Core, the recipient of the IEEE's Third Millennium Award, and was recently named an IEEE Fellow. As one of the executive editors of IEEE's Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK), he helped develop the first widely agreed statement of the scope and content of the software engineering practice. As chair of the IEEE Computer Society's Professional Practices Committee, Moore led efforts to align the Society's SWEBOK Guide with the model curriculum for software engineering, the Computer Society's two certification programs, and the corpus of standards for software and systems engineering.

Moore, a Certified Software Development Professional, has 40 years of experience in software engineering, at MITRE and previously at IBM Corp. His work focuses on the application of engineering principles to modern information technology and software problems. He has degrees from the University of North Carolina and Syracuse University and holds two U.S. patents. His latest book on software engineering standards, "The Road Map to Software Engineering: A Standards-Based Guide," was published in 2006 by John Wiley & Sons.
