MITRE's San Diego Site Celebrates 30th Anniversary FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher SAN DIEGO, Calif., August 24, 2010 — The MITRE Corporation's San Diego site celebrates its 30th anniversary this month. First activated in 1980 with a staff of five, the site today includes 75 staff members and has two divisions that support the Navy and the Joint Tactical Radio System. In its early days, the site's small staff worked in makeshift offices located in a historic Army bunker called Battery Humphreys. Between 1980 and 1987, the staff moved three more times: in 1981 to the largest building at the Navy Lab, in 1984 to two trailers on the east rim of the peninsula overlooking the San Diego harbor, and finally to its current location in a new MITRE building co-located with the Navy Laboratory seaside facilities. Expansions in 1997 and 2002 accommodated a growing staff, which by 2007 reached a number four times that of 1987; that year, the site added additional office spaces off the Naval Base in the refurbished area of the Naval Training Center, now called Liberty Station. According to David Coomber, director of San Diego operations, over the next few years MITRE expects the site's tactical networking programs to extend into new applications for the set of Joint Tactical Radio Systems now being developed and delivered. Navy programs will increase their focus on information dominance and integrated missile defense. "We look forward to the years ahead, to deepening our relationship with the Navy Lab and with Joint Programs, and to continuing to be a MITRE and national resource for providing solutions that make a difference," he said. MITRE leaders and military and government guests marked the anniversary with a day of events that included site program overviews, guest speakers, demonstrations, and a celebratory reception. About The MITRE Corporation The MITRE Corporation (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit organization that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government.
