MITRE-sponsored National Merit Scholarships Awarded FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher MCLEAN, Va., April 29, 2010 — MITRE President and CEO Alfred Grasso recently presented the winners of the third annual MITRE-sponsored National Merit Scholarships with certificates recognizing their distinguished performance and academic promise. The winners—high school seniors Brian Hamrick and Ezra Rudman—are both children of MITRE employees. Each will receive $1,000 per year for the next four years. "MITRE has always been committed to our employees' high level of academic excellence," said Grasso. "There is no finer investment than extending this commitment to the success of our nation's future engineers and scientists." Since its 50th anniversary in 2008, MITRE has financed the scholarships in the spirit of cultivating future leaders. The children of current MITRE employees who qualified as finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program competition were eligible for the scholarships. For more information on the competition, visit www.nationalmerit.org. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) identifies candidates for the scholarships and its selection committee chooses the winners. NMSC is an independent, not-for-profit organization established in 1955 to honor the nation's scholastic talent and encourage academic excellence at all levels of education. Brian is the son of two MITRE employees, David, an executive director, and Lynne, a lead multi-discipline systems engineer. He attends Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va. In his essay, Brian credits attending summer math camp for opening his eyes to the advanced academic challenges he enjoys tackling today. He is captain of his school's senior computer team, a medalist at the 2008 and 2009 International Olympiad in Informatics, a semifinalist for the 2008 and 2009 U.S. Physics Team Olympiad, and a finalist for the 2008 and 2009 North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad. He will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ezra, who graduated earlier this year from Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, is the son of Rick Rudman, a MITRE executive director, and Bev Rudman. In his essay, Ezra wrote about his interest in politics. He was his school's Student Council vice president for three years, starting second baseman on his varsity baseball team, secretary of communications for the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Junior State of America debating organization, a summer employee at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and winner of his high school's award for "Excellence in Mathematics." He will be deciding shortly about his school choice.
