BEDFORD, Mass., September 14, 2011 — The MITRE Corporation today announced that it made this year's InformationWeek 500, an annual ranking of the nation's most innovative users of business technology. MITRE was honored for its recently upgraded, highly customizable intranet. MITRE Vice President and CIO Joel Jacobs accepted the award at the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Dana Point, Calif., where the 2011 list was revealed.

MITRE's winning nomination focused on the new version of its intranet, the MITRE Information Infrastructure (MII). The MII enables more than 7,000 MITRE scientists, engineers, and support specialists based in Bedford, Mass., McLean, Va., and 60 sites worldwide to collaborate and share knowledge quickly and securely to develop technology and systems engineering solutions for their government sponsors and customers. The old MII had received awards for its functionality, but it relied on a vendor platform and was costly to maintain and challenging to update. The 2.0 version was built using open source code, reducing vendor and hardware costs and making it easier to respond to changes. It features a MITRE-developed social networking application called Handshake, which allows employees to connect and collaborate with one another and with external partners. The new intranet also has an integrated search tool and home page customization options, letting employees choose from an array of project-related gadgets.

"We're honored to be included on the InformationWeek 500 and to be recognized for our next-gen intranet," said Jacobs. "Employee collaboration is key to idea development, knowledge sharing, and to delivering the best solutions and value to our sponsors and customers. The revamped version of the MII makes it easier to do all of this faster, better, and at a lower cost. It's a definite win-win."

"For 23 years, the InformationWeek 500 has chronicled and honored the most innovative users of business technology," said InformationWeek Editor In Chief Rob Preston. "In this day and age, however, being innovative isn't enough. Companies and their IT organizations need to innovate faster than ever before to stay a step or two ahead of their customers, partners, and competitors. This year's ranking placed special emphasis on those high-octane business technology innovators."

Through an invitation-only process, InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments, and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. Top winners have included: The Vanguard Group, CME Group, Conway, National Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark, Hilton Hotels, and Unum. The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as they spotlight the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
