MITRE Named to InformationWeek 500 List of Innovative Business Technology Organizations

BEDFORD, Mass., September 14, 2011 — The MITRE Corporation today announced that it made this year's InformationWeek 500, an annual ranking of the nation's most innovative users of business technology. MITRE was honored for its recently upgraded, highly customizable intranet. MITRE Vice President and CIO Joel Jacobs accepted the award at the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Dana Point, Calif., where the 2011 list was revealed.

MITRE's winning nomination focused on the new version of its intranet, the MITRE Information Infrastructure (MII). The MII enables more than 7,000 MITRE scientists, engineers, and support specialists based in Bedford, Mass., McLean, Va., and 60 sites worldwide to collaborate and share knowledge quickly and securely to develop technology and systems engineering solutions for their government sponsors and customers. The old MII had received awards for its functionality, but it relied on a vendor platform and was costly to maintain and challenging to update. The 2.0 version was built using open source code, reducing vendor and hardware costs and making it easier to respond to changes. It features a MITRE-developed social networking application called Handshake, which allows employees to connect and collaborate with one another and with external partners. The new intranet also has an integrated search tool and home page customization options, letting employees choose from an array of project-related gadgets.
