Department of Defense Renames R&D Center Operated by MITRE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher MCLEAN, Va., September 27, 2011 — The Department of Defense Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence Federally Funded Research and Development Center (DoD C3I FFRDC), operated by The MITRE Corporation since 1958, has been renamed the National Security Engineering Center (NSEC). The FFRDC provides systems engineering, information technology, operational concepts, and enterprise modernization to address the DoD's critical needs. "The new name better reflects the broad spectrum of our work program for customers across the DoD and Intelligence Community and their mission partners," explained Raymond Haller, director of the NSEC and a MITRE senior vice president. The name change was included in the DoD FFRDC Management Plan issued in May by Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (AT&L) Ashton Carter. At the same time, AT&L replaced the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration and DoD Chief Information Officer as the government sponsor for the FFRDC. MITRE's role in operating the FFRDC remains unchanged. "We understand the immense challenges facing the national security community and we're doing all we can to support our customers within this community," added Haller. "For example, we're focused on supporting DoD operations and strengthening command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. We're also focused on improving acquisition outcomes, preserving an information advantage, addressing 'whole of government' issues such as enterprise IT consolidation, and applying increased attention to affordability, effectiveness and efficiency in all of our work." About The MITRE Corporation The MITRE Corporation (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit organization that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
