MCLEAN, Va., May 31, 2012 — The MITRE Corporation's President and CEO Alfred Grasso is the newly elected chairman of the board of directors of AFCEA International. Grasso, who served as AFCEA vice chair since 2010, began his term as chairman on May 21. He will oversee the association's Executive Committee and Compensation Committee and participate on the AFCEA Educational Foundation Board of Directors.

Established in 1946, AFCEA International is a nonprofit membership association serving the military, government, industry, and academia as an ethical forum for advancing professional knowledge and relationships in the fields of communications, IT, intelligence, and global security. The association has 35,000 individual members and 2,000 corporate members.

"It's a tremendous honor to help lead AFCEA and carry on its distinguished history and vital mission," said Grasso. "I look forward to working with AFCEA's leadership and member community to build partnerships to further the association's work to foster knowledge sharing among defense professionals, advance global security, and cultivate the next generation of STEM leaders."

A longtime member of AFCEA, Grasso has served for more than seven years on the association's Executive Committee and board. As vice chair, he led the Budget and Finance Committee. He earlier served on the Audit and Governance Committees.

Grasso joined MITRE in 1986 and has served as CEO since 2006. Concurrent with his CEO responsibilities, he also serves as director of MITRE's National Security Engineering Center (NSEC), the federally funded research and development center that the company operates for the Department of Defense. He is an appointed member of the Defense Science Board and is a member of several scientific and academic advisory boards. He is the president of the Board of Directors of the National GEM Consortium, a nonprofit that promotes the participation of under-represented groups in STEM careers.
