MCLEAN, Va., December 21, 2012 — The MITRE Corporation recently announced the promotions of Lillian Zarrelli Ryals and Sarah MacConduibh. Ryals was promoted to director, senior vice president and general manager of the Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD), the FAA-sponsored federally funded research and development center. MacConduibh, Air Force Portfolio director in the organization's Command and Control Center, was appointed vice president of Air Force Programs.

"Lillian and Sarah have contributed enormously to MITRE's reputation for technical excellence," said Alfred Grasso, MITRE president and CEO. "Both are highly regarded as thought leaders by our sponsor community for their expertise as well as their technical and cross-agency perspectives. Their appointments will further strengthen our work for the FAA and the Air Force."

With MITRE since 1979, Ryals has more than 30 years of experience working in the aviation sector across a broad range of National Airspace System research, modernization and operations activities. She is responsible for CAASD's work supporting the FAA and international civil aviation authorities in addressing operational and technical challenges to meet aviation's global capacity, efficiency, safety and security needs. Ryals leads CAASD's overall strategic planning, sponsor and stakeholder engagement and work program oversight.

Ryals previously served in a variety of leadership roles for the ATM/CNS (air traffic management/communication navigation and surveillance) systems evolution and operations work for the FAA. This work has encompassed operational concepts and infrastructure for future terminal, surface, en route, oceanic and flow management decision support systems; aircraft avionics systems; integrated airspace and procedures design; unmanned aircraft systems; and aviation system safety and security.

Throughout her career, Ryals has been active in national and international aviation standards bodies, including the International Civil Aviation Organization and RTCA. She is currently a member of the RTCA Policy Board and the NextGen Advisory Committee, the Air Traffic Control Association, the Aero Club, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. She served as chair of the board of directors of Women in Aerospace in 2012 and volunteers in support of the advancement of women and girls in the STEM fields.

MacConduibh joins the executive leadership team in C2C, one of two operating centers within the Department of Defense-sponsored National Security Engineering Center. A strong contributor to MITRE's national security work program, she brings extensive experience in program management, strategic planning and systems engineering to her new position.

As director of MITRE's Air Force Portfolio, MacConduibh is responsible for developing and implementing the organization's Air Force work program, which addresses the Department of the Air Force's critical needs in command and control, communications, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; cyber and information operations; and information technology. The program supports organizations from HQ and Secretariat AF offices through acquisition centers, major commands, and operational units.

Previously, MacConduibh was technical director for the Air Force Electronic Systems Center Engineering Office, directing strategic technical planning and providing oversight for more than 200 programs. She also served as director of Integration for Joint Networks, director of Engineering and chief engineer for the Air Force Global Information Grid Systems Group at Hanscom Air Force Base and project director for MITRE's MILSATCOM projects.

MacConduibh has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Bucknell University. She served for five years on active duty in the Air Force before joining MITRE in 1988.
