MCLEAN, Va., November 20, 2012 — The MITRE Corporation formalized its partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) during the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) 12th Air Navigation Conference in Montreal, Nov. 19 to 30.

On November 19, The MITRE Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), agreeing to support CAAS's development and implementation of a Centre of Excellence for Air Traffic Management, which will engage in research and development activities to seek solutions for the complex aviation infrastructure and air traffic management challenges facing the Asia Pacific region.

"As a Centre of Excellence for Air Traffic Management (ATM), Singapore will be keenly positioned to provide the partnership and solutions the Asia Pacific region needs to achieve greater capacity in the face of rising demand, while still maintaining high levels of safety and service," said Lillian Ryals, MITRE Senior Vice President and General Manager of MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development. "We are pleased to be partnering with CAAS in this important endeavor."

"With a long and distinguished history and many world-class experts, The MITRE Corporation is providing leadership in improving the safety and performance of the aviation system, including in the field of ATM. CAAS is privileged to partner with MITRE in our endeavour to advance ATM modernisation in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific for greater safety, efficiency and capacity of the aviation system. A key anchor is building Singapore as a Centre of Excellence for ATM, developing ATM concepts, technologies and solutions for Singapore and the region," said Mr. Yap Ong Heng, Director-General, CAAS.

Gregg Leone, international director (Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Canada) for MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development and director of the MITRE Aviation Institute said, "The collaborative activities the two parties have initially agreed to undertake include air traffic management research and development initiatives as well as knowledge and technology sharing in the areas of ATM, safety, and regulatory issues. In addition, MITRE has agreed to provide resources to help CAAS establish the capabilities and infrastructure necessary to support ATM research and development activities in Singapore."
