MCLEAN, Va., December 21, 2012 — The MITRE Corporation's Board of Trustees has elected national security and defense policy expert Michèle Flournoy to the board. Flournoy is a senior adviser in the Public Sector practice of The Boston Consulting Group, a global management consulting firm.

Flournoy served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from 2009 to February 2012. She was the principal adviser to the Secretary of Defense for national security and defense policy, oversight of military plans and operations and National Security Council deliberations. She led the development of the Department of Defense's (DoD) new Strategic Guidance and represented the DoD in foreign engagements, in the media and before Congress. Prior to her confirmation, Flournoy co-led President Obama's transition team at the DoD.

"Ms. Flournoy is a leading mind in the national security community," said Alfred Grasso, MITRE president and CEO. "Her deep knowledge and insights will benefit MITRE's work not only in the defense and homeland security areas, but across the wide spectrum of agencies we support."

Flournoy is a member of the Defense Policy Board, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Aspen Strategy Group. She is the co-founder and former president of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a non-partisan, nonprofit research institution dedicated to developing strong, pragmatic and principled national security policies.

Earlier, Flournoy was senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and served as a distinguished research professor at the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. In the mid-1990s, she served as principal deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Threat Reduction and deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy, where she oversaw strategy; requirements, plans and counter-proliferation; and Russia, Ukraine and Eurasian Affairs.

She has a master's degree in international relations from Balliol College, Oxford University, where she was a Newton-Tatum scholar. She holds a bachelor's degree in social studies from Harvard University.
