The Boston Globe Ranks MITRE Number 6 Top Place to Work FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher BEDFORD, Mass., November 9, 2012 — The Boston Globe has named The MITRE Corporation to its Top Places to Work list for 2012. MITRE was ranked number 6 out of 25 in the category of largest companies, those with 1,000 or more employees. This is the organization's fourth year on the list of the Commonwealth's best workplaces. MITRE was specifically cited for supporting employees' educational pursuits through its Accelerated Graduate Degree Program, a competitive program that allows staff to obtain advanced degrees at a faster pace. With tuition, book and time allowances, employees can earn a Ph.D. or master's degree that directly relates to MITRE's work. The Top Places to Work survey was conducted by WorkPlace Dynamics of Exton, Pa., specialists in employee engagement and retention. The Globe invited 1,586 employers to participate in the survey; 304 organizations employing a total of 210,000 people completed the process. Completed confidential surveys were received from 81,907 individuals, who rated their employers based on workplace practices in compensation, leadership, appreciation, career opportunities and management. Employees graded their organization's performance according to 24 statements, ranging from "New ideas are encouraged at this company," to "My manager makes it easier to do my job well." "MITRE continues to shine as a leading employer who values employees and creates a workplace that recognizes the importance of work-life balance," said Karen Quinn-Quintin, MITRE vice president and chief human resources officer. "We're especially pleased that this recognition comes from survey results of our employees' views about the environment and culture on our Bedford campus." Nearly 2,100 of MITRE's 7,600 employees work at the organization's Bedford headquarters, providing systems engineering, research and development and IT support to a range of government sponsors and customers. In June, MITRE opened a 105,000-square-foot, state-of-the art laboratory to advance cutting-edge research and development of military and civilian technologies. "When we launched in 2008 during the Great Recession, we wondered if employers would lose focus on keeping their employees happy," Boston Globe Business Editor Shirley Leung said. "But businesses have continued to make strides in employee appreciation and opportunities. With more than 300 companies surveyed this year, we saw our highest participation rate to date." Now in its fifth year, the Top Places to Work list was published in the Boston Globe magazine on Nov. 4.
