BEDFORD, Mass., June 21, 2012 — Community, government and industry leaders gathered yesterday at The MITRE Corporation's Bedford, Mass. campus to see first-hand the capabilities of the company's $51 million investment in cutting-edge research and development to advance military and civilian technologies.

"With this investment, our engineers and scientists have at their fingertips the highest caliber equipment and workspaces needed to foster collaboration and innovation," said MITRE President and CEO Alfred Grasso. "This combination will deliver the transformational solutions our sponsors and customers require to solve complex national challenges. As a resource, the lab will benefit not just one discipline, but multiple disciplines, and not just MITRE's sponsors, but the Commonwealth and the nation."

The new three-story lab building is part of a $100 million investment in the 103-acre campus by MITRE.

Mass. Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray gave remarks at the dedication ceremony of the state-of-the-art building. "MITRE is a leader in innovation, and its technology will support continued growth in the region and the Commonwealth," said Lt. Gov. Murray. "With this new investment in Bedford, MITRE's technology will enhance services for our veterans and regional activities including growth at Hanscom Air Force Base, an important military asset for our state's security and economy."

The 105,000-square-foot building was dedicated to Robert Everett, MITRE's first technical director, and president from 1969 to 1986, and a pioneer in real-time computer technologies. The event included a lab tour and demonstrations of robotics, GPS, first responders interoperability, microelectronics, and the health lab.

The electronics laboratory's design was based on industry best practices, including modular, ergonomic sound design, collaborative workspaces and energy efficiency. Its end-to-end capabilities allow researchers to look at challenges from every angle, expediting the time it takes an idea to become a prototype. The lab has 30,000 square feet of open lab space; an 8,000-square-foot service courtyard and a rooftop laboratory for research conducted outside. About 220 staff with expertise in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science and physics will work in the new building which is Leadership and Energy in Environmental Design (LEED) certified.

The new structure replaces MITRE's original E-Building, named after its shape and built in 1959, after the company was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization to provide systems engineering support to the Air Force's Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) air defense system.

View the "Collaboration and Innovation" video for additional information on the new laboratory building, MITRE, and its work.
