BEDFORD, Mass., September 12, 2012 — The MITRE Corporation has published its 500-plus page Systems Engineering Guide (SEG) as a free, downloadable eBook. Based on over 50 years of accumulated MITRE expertise, the comprehensive systems engineering resource covers more than 100 subjects and features articles written by 130 MITRE systems engineers. The SEG can be accessed on an iPad, iPhone, Android, or Kindle.

Launched in March 2010 as an internal resource, the SEG evolved into a publicly available, online resource first posted in June 2011. It is designed so that professionals on any point on the systems engineering continuum—a government acquisition program team, industry professionals, researchers, and students—can benefit from lessons learned and apply best practices in their work environment.

George Rebovich, director of MITRE's Systems Engineering Practice Office and technical lead for the SEG, said, "We had received a number of requests for the SEG to be made available in a format that can be hosted on popular mobile platforms. As a result, we decided to pursue the creation of an eBook version."

The SEG has won praise from customers, peer organizations, industry and professional engineering associations, and academia. It is extensively referenced in the Guide to the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge.

The SEG's easily digestible content is not intended to replace academic textbooks or government policy on systems engineering. Rather, each article identifies real-world problems and conundrums that commonly occur in engineering systems and provides practical solutions to avoid or mitigate them.

When the SEG went online last year, Lou Metzger, MITRE's corporate chief engineer and MITRE fellow said, "The SEG captures valuable information that, until now, hasn't been available in a single, central location. This isn't a Systems Engineering 101 course; it's an 'in the trenches' view of the challenges our systems engineers face every day."
