PRINCETON, N.J., April 11, 2013 — The MITRE Corporation and Princeton researchers have joined efforts to advance technologies to address some of the most complex national challenges in diverse areas, including cybersecurity, financial engineering and data mining. The new MITRE site on Princeton's Forrestal Campus brings together the country's brightest scientific and engineering talent to work jointly on solutions to large-scale problems.

"We're excited about building a strong collaboration with Princeton researchers to leverage their expertise to help solve issues of critical national importance," said Richard Byrne, senior vice president and general manager of MITRE's Command and Control Center, at the site's open house. "This model brings academia to bear on a wide range of issues, and, working side-by-side, we can expedite solutions to complex challenges."

More than 50 people, including renowned Princeton faculty and MITRE executives, toured the quantum optics laboratory and marked the office's official March opening with a ribbon cutting. Princeton University Provost Christopher Eisgruber and A.J. Stewart Smith, Princeton dean for research, welcomed MITRE's presence on the campus and emphasized the benefits of collaboration.

MITRE's relationship with Princeton researchers began in 2006 when Gerald Gilbert, who leads MITRE's Quantum Information Science (QIS) Group and heads the organization's Princeton office, collaborated with university faculty on quantum error correction and quantum computing issues. Combining physical science, mathematics, computer science and engineering, QIS revolutionizes the acquisition, transmission and processing of information, which will lead to innovations in computing, metrology and cryptography. The new site brings together not only leading QIS scientists, but connects MITRE experts with corresponding academic leaders conducting cutting-edge research at Princeton in areas such as optimization, operations research and power engineering.

MITRE's five-person Princeton office is located on the university's Forrestal Campus, home to several of Princeton's research organizations and industry partners. The new site is a test bed for future MITRE-university collaborations.
