| 1998 Texas Solar Car Race To Be Held in San Antonio MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher May 12, 1998 — The Second Annual Texas Solar Car Race will be held at the Sam Rayburn Middle School (1400 Cedar Hurst; Loop 410 at Valley-Hi) in San Antonio on Saturday, May 16, starting at 11:00 a.m. The race is sponsored by San Antonio City Public Service, and hosted by the Rayburn Middle School and the MITRE Corporation. Approximately 150 students from San Antonio, Austin and Houston areas will race model solar cars that they have designed and built. In addition, more than 300 spectators are expected to attend. The event will be judged in three categories: speed, creativity, and "media day" competition. Winners in the speed category will be determined on how fast the cars can run over a 20 meter track. The creativity category will be judged on vehicle design as well as speed. The "media day" competition actually takes place after the race. Student competitors photograph the action on digital cameras, download the data into computers, and then add text. The winning entries will be run over the Rayburn Middle School's video network system. "This event gives students the chance to use knowledge gained from the courses they take in school, as well as basic science and engineering skills," says the event's director, Robert Blount from MITRE. "It gives students a chance to work on a real-life team project. This year we have five times as many entries, and the number of sponsors and mentors has increased tenfold. We're looking forward to an exciting and fun competition." Media interested in covering this event should call Bob Blount or Ron Rhoads at (210)675-9640.
