May 20, 1999 — The MITRE Corporation's president and chief executive officer Victor A. DeMarines announced the promotion of Amr ElSawy of Reston, VA, to senior vice president, general manager, and director of MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD). CAASD is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration. He succeeds Dr. John J. (Jack) Fearnsides, who is retiring at the end of May.

ElSawy, who has been with MITRE since 1978, was elected as a corporate officer in 1998. He was responsible for the establishment and operation of MITRE's controlled affiliate, Aviation International (AvInt), and led the international aviation work program in Egypt. He has experience in CNS/ATM planning and modernization, aviation safety assessments, deregulation and privatization planning, airline operations control, business case analysis, and implementation of public-private partnerships. ElSawy will be based at the company's area headquarters in McLean, VA.

In announcing the promotion, DeMarines said, "Mr. ElSawy brings to his new responsibilities an intimate knowledge of the challenges facing aviation, a proactive business perspective, and a leadership style that is needed to work with the aviation community." In his new role, ElSawy will direct all MITRE's aviation work supporting the FAA and international aviation organizations.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is an independent, not-for-profit systems engineering firm engaged in scientific and technical activities in the public interest. With primary locations in Bedford, MA and McLean, VA, and 60 other sites worldwide, MITRE operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers, one for the Department of Defense, another for the Internal Revenue Service, and CAASD, for the Federal Aviation Administration.

From 1987 to 1996, ElSawy served in various senior management positions in CAASD. He was responsible for directing strategic initiatives, developing information technology investment strategies, ensuring cross-functional integration across programs, and evolution of the communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) programs.

ElSawy holds bachelor and masters degrees in electrical engineering from West Virginia University (1977) and George Washington University (1980) respectively, and received an MBA from Georgetown University in 1998.
