Bedford, Massachusetts, January 22, 1999 — Woburn resident Barbara McElhiney of The MITRE Corporation was honored last night as the outgoing President of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce during their annual dinner at the Bedford Renaissance Hotel.

McElhiney, who is Communications Strategic Planning Manager at MITRE, has been the Chamber's president for the past two years, received a plaque, engraved watch, roses and a standing ovation. Elected to her position after serving four years as treasurer, she has represented MITRE on the Bedford Chamber since 1990. She was also nominated for their Outstanding Service Award for 1998.

In her farewell remarks, McElhiney summarized the Chamber's many accomplishments during the past year—updating their Web page; publishing a member newsletter; organizing and hosting a phon-a-thon; making progress on communicating Bedford's sign bylaws and road construction projects affecting business; hosting new community events such as the Prom Stroll and Holiday House Tour; and working with the local newspaper and town officials to increase the Chamber's visibility and communication.

Annual awards were also presented at the event. The Business Person of the Year award was presented to 15-year old K-K Gregory for transferring her creative idea into a highly innovative and successful business. Wristies Inc. was founded in 1994 after Gregory, then 10 years old, invented a wrist accessory to cover the gap between the coat sleeve and gloves. The award for Business of the Year went to the Bedford Renaissance Hotel for their community involvement and philanthropy in Bedford. The Bedford Funeral Home received the Beautification Award in recognition of their elegant property, and Chamber executive director Maureen Sullivan received the Outstanding Service to the Chamber Award.
