Although the Web continues its exponential growth rate, we are only now beginning to deal with the complexity in communications, security, and data and information management. This issue of The Edge focuses exclusively on the World Wide Web.

In collaboration with its government sponsors, MITRE is providing innovative solutions to current and projected web problems. This special issue describes MITRE's information summarization (WebSumm), video access (Broadcast News Navigator), image broker (CHIPS), Webcasting, and firewall initiatives.

Our corporate Innovation Team (I-Team) leads MITRE's information technology activities. The I-Team championed MITRE's adoption of a Web-based infrastructure as a strategic direction for the company resulting in our intranet, the MITRE Information Infrastructure. Because of the volume of work on the Web, this issue gives pointers to six other articles describing MITRE's Web innovations.
