Mission PlanningWendy C. Etkind Where should I put my radar? That's what the Marines ask MITRE when MITRE designs the Marines' live TBM fire exercises. The Marines need to know where they should place their radar to provide coverage for their in-coming missiles. They also need to know the effects of terrain masking and clutter on the radar and how these factors affect visibility. MITRE is building several Java-based applets which allow the Marines to click on a location on their DTED terrain map and see the anti-TBM and anti-cruise missile capabilities of the radar in the context of the terrain.
This Marine-specific battalion/battery mission planning applet is just the first of many MITRE is building for the Marines as part of the CEC battle lab. The tools are written in Java so the Marines can use their existing multi-platform network to use these tools. The Marines don't have the money to spend on expensive workstation solutions for their problems, they need quick flexible tools which run on their existing hardware. And they need these tools in the near-term. Future tools in this Mission Planning toolkit will include different radars, in-coming and defensive missiles. The Marines will use the full-blown toolkit to plan landing attacks on different beaches. The Marines can simulate landing and deploying their offensive and defensive weapons as they charge forward while fending off attacks from incoming missiles and other artillery.
