Improving
the Usability of a Corporate Intranet Intranets put access to large quantities of corporate information on users' desktops. Creating a usable interface to such a large information space can be problematic. MITRE recently applied usability engineering techniques to its intranet to improve its usability and usefulness. Collaborative Obsolescence Management and Evaluation
Tool (COMET) COMET is a Web-based tool for managing obsolescence problems. It was developed to support the Joint STARS Program. It provides a hierarchical summary of the current obsolescence or DMS (Diminished Manufacturing Sources) status of electronic systems. In particular, separate DMS evaluations and cost estimates are provided at the program, system, subsystem, line replaceable unit (LRU), and circuit card assembly (CCA) levels. These evaluations reflect the likelihood and degree of impending DMS problems so that budgeting for problem resolution may be accomplished. Intranet-Based Mission Planning During amphibious assault operations, Marines need to protect crucial assets from tactical missile attack. MITRE is providing the Marines with interactive tools that run on any platform to help them accomplish their mission. MITRE is adapting the latest in software technology--Java and the intranet--to bring cost-effective solutions to Marine needs. Sealink Improves Fleet Access to Intelligence SeaLink is an Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) sponsored development and integration activity to improve fleet access to maritime intelligence. SeaLink provides fleet and other intelligence consumers with on-line and on-demand access to maritime intelligence information produced and maintained at the National Maritime Intelligence Center. SeaLink provides direct, seamless access to ONI production databases via World Wide Web (WWW) browsers. Movement on the Web Have you ever tracked a Federal Express or United Parcel System package on the web? It is easy. Now, the same is true for transportation within the Department of Defense (DOD). Web technology was used for the Global Transportation Network (GTN) to provide an easy to access, easy to use capability for tracking and assessing DOD transportation movements. Notifying Airmen Using Web Technologies The World Wide Web permits applications to exchange information across different operating system platforms in a way that is easy for programmers to implement while retaining a common appearance to the user. This technology will enable NOTAMs to be sent over both strategic and tactical common user communication networks. |
