Where can you go to see the high performance networking future today? Every November the IEEE/ACM supercomputing series of conferences holds demonstrations of the highest-end networking technologies. MITRE is organizing the networking component of SC98: High Performance Networking and Computing, November 7-13, 1998, in Orlando, FL. MITRE is designing the all-fiber SC98 show-floor network that interconnects exhibitors' booths. We are working closely with network technology vendors to incorporate their state-of-the-art networking technologies into the SCinet98 Network Operations Center (NOC), including gigabit-per-second networking technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, HiPPI, and Fiber Channel. MITRE is also coordinating the SC98 connectivity to various experimental wide area network (WAN) technologies that make up the Next Generation Internet (NGI) and Internet2 initiatives. These WAN technologies include:
MITRE is working with the President's National Coordination Office for Computing, Information, and Communications to support demonstrations involving the NGI and Internet2 at SC98. The NGI will have 100 to 1000 times the bandwidth of the present Internet. Examples of scheduled NGI networking demonstrations that require such high bandwidths include collaborative immersive visualization, remote telemedicine, battlefield simulations and visualization, and multi-media information-on-demand environments.
