MITRE Sponsors Team for the DARPA Grand Challenge '05 DARPA Grand Challenge Overview The Grand Challenge, created by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is a field test to accelerate the research and development of autonomous ground vehicles that will save lives on the battlefield. The test is a 175-mile race across the desert, following a designated route over man-made obstacles. A $2 million prize is offered to the winner. Although no team successfully completed the Grand Challenge course in 2004, important progress was made and DARPA is repeating the challenge in 2005. This year, for the first time, MITRE is sponsoring a team to build a vehicle to leverage its growing robotics capabilities in pursuit of the Grand Challenge. Alan Christiansen says, "In a sense we can't fail, because we're going to learn so much through this. It's going to help us develop our capabilities."
