Recent Accomplishments June 6, 2005 The MITRE Meteor was selected by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to compete in the semifinal event of the DARPA 2005 Grand Challenge. Of the 195 original entries to this year's contest, only 40 teams have been selected to participate in the semifinal National Qualification Event at Fontana, Calif., September 27 to October 5. Ultimately, just 20 teams will compete in the October 8 Grand Challenge over 175 miles of rugged terrain in the southwestern United States. (View press release) April 4, 2005 MITRE Meteorites celebrate when DARPA sends notification that Meteor will be recipient of Site Visit as part of 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. March 11, 2005 MITRE Meteor featured on video as part of submission to DARPA. This video shows a tour of the vehicle, autonomous activity, and obstacle avoidance accomplishments to date. The video can be viewed [RealPlayer, 8MB] or downloaded [MPG, 84MB]. February 11, 2005 MITRE Meteorites application accepted by DARPA for its 2005 Grand Challenge Event. January 14, 2005 After repeated successful test runs of new control software, the MITRE Meteorites demonstrated the Meteor's capabilities to sponsors by taking time out for an appreciative "ride along" for several corporate officers. December 19, 2004 Today, at approximately 5:00pm, the MITRE Meteor successfully circumnavigated a vacant McLean, VA office building. Totally under computer control, it used a 15 way point RDDF file similar in format to those used to control entries in the Grand Challenge event. December 8, 2004 Exactly ten months before DARPA's next Grand Challenge Race on October 8, 2005... MITRE's GC vehicle moved this afternoon under programmed control. Before today, control of the vehicle was by human input, either via muscle power on steering and gas/brakes, or via a joystick-style console. Today's test included no sensors, so the programmed control was open-loop. Next steps include integrating sensory feedback to achieve reliable speed control, and integrating a GPS unit to allow a test of waypoint to waypoint traversal.
