MITRE Nanosystems Group Staff

The Nanosystems Group started in 1992 and includes eight full-time and two part-time staff. The group leverages the diverse technical backgrounds and experience of its members, to tackle a wide variety of technical challenges in nanotechnology and integrated nanosystems.


Full-Time Members of the Technical Staff (MTS)

Dr. James C. Ellenbogen, Chief Scientist

Ph.D. Chemical Physics, University of Georgia, 1977.
M.S. Chemical Physics, University of Wisconsin, 1972.
B.S. Chemistry, State University of New York, Buffalo, 1970.

Dr. Ellenbogen is Chief Scientist for the Nanosystems Group and Emerging Technologies in MITRE's Acquisition and Systems Analysis Division. He joined the MITRE Corporation in 1984 and founded the Nanosystems Group in 1992. Dr. Ellenbogen also helped establish MITRE's Student Program in 1989 and continues to act as the program coordinator and mentor to students.

Dr. Shamik Das, Group Leader

Dr. Das joined MITRE and the Nanosystems Group in 2004.

Mark D. Taczak, Lead Engineer

Mr. Taczak joined MITRE and the Nanosystems Group in 2000 as part of the student program, and joined the corporation as a Member of the Technical Staff in 2004.

James F. Klemic, Nanotechnology Laboratory Director

Ph.D. studies (ABD) in Physics, Case Western Reserve University, 1993-1998.

Mr. Klemic joined MITRE and the Nanosystems Group in 2007.

Areas of expertise: micro- and nanofabrication, MEMS and microfluidics, nanoelectronics, chemical/biological sensing

Dr. Sichu Li, Lead Engineer

Dr. Li joined MITRE and the Nanosystems Group in 2008.

Areas of expertise: chemical/biological sensing, sensor testing and evaluation, detection algorithms, nanomaterial synthesis and characterization

Elaine Mullen, Senior Engineer

Graduate studies in Human Anatomy, Plant Physiology, and Biochemistry, Medical College of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University.

Ms. Mullen joined MITRE in 1979 and the Nanosystems Group in 2008.

Areas of expertise: glycobiology, human pathogens

Jessica Rajkowski, Senior Engineer

Ms. Rajkowski joined MITRE and the Nanosystems Group in 2010.

Dr. Kurt Eisenbeiser, Lead Engineer

Dr. Eisenbeiser joined MITRE and the Nanosystems Group in 2010.

Robert E. Latham, Lead Engineer

Contemporary Optics Graduate Program, Institute of Optics, University of Rochester, 1989. B.A. Mathematics, College of William and Mary, 1977.

Mr. Latham joined MITRE and the Nanosystems Group in 2010. As the former Director of the Optics and Modern Physics Laboratory at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Mr. Latham has collaborated with the Nanosystems Group’s student program for 17 years.
