MITRE Cross-Boundary Information Sharing (XBIS) Lab
MITRE's Cross-Boundary Information Sharing (XBIS) Laboratory is an unclassified demonstration and integration facility that captures the state-of-the-art in the field of cross-boundary information sharing. The goal of the XBIS Lab is to demonstrate what is possible today and a vision for what may be possible in the near future. Demonstration Scenarios The first of three distributed scenarios based on current issues of national importance has been developed and is available for demonstration in the XBIS Lab. That scenario is a national counterterrorism scenario based on the Markle Foundation's Visualization: A Trusted Information Network for Homeland Security. The development of a second scenario is underway and will be a scenario based on a coalition war fighting, chosen to address the shift in U.S. foreign policy from the NATO-focused coalitions of the Cold War to the more flexible and dynamic partnerships in place today. Under consideration for development next year, is a third scenario, which will focus on disaster management, addressing responding to events like Hurricane Katrina. Demo Architecture MITRE is integrating different technologies that enhance information sharing across organizational and classification boundaries. To demonstrate the capabilities of these technologies, the laboratory provides connectivity to up to twenty domains, a combination of real and simulated environments. These environments represent local and wide-area networks interconnecting agencies and coalitions in the Unclassified, Sensitive But Unclassified, US Secret, Secret Releasable, and Top Secret SCI domains. The laboratory architecture supports both integrated operational scenarios and stand-alone demonstrations. Technologies XBIS Lab technologies include the state-of-the-art in cross-domain desktops, cross-domain email systems, cross-domain federated search and retrieval tools, guard technologies, label-based data management tools, tear-line production and release products, and cross-boundary collaboration and chat tools. In addition, the XBIS Lab will include digital rights management tools and tools for metadata search and retrieval. As promising new capabilities and concepts become available, they will be integrated into the XBIS Lab. The XBIS Lab will also be a collection point for the latest research in non-technical information sharing, that is, in the social practices and cultural studies among communities of interest. Scheduling a Demo The XBIS Lab, located in the MITRE-2 Building in McLean, Virginia, is available for demonstrations, experimentation, and funded projects. Sponsors who are interested in visiting the lab for a tour and demo should contact their MITRE POC. Page last updated: September 4, 2009 | Top of page |
