ABSTRACT

Work is underway toward building at least three Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBASs) to GPS and GLONASS for aviation: the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Wide-Area Augmentation System (WAAS), the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau's (JCAB) Multifunctional Transport Satellite (MTSAT) Satellite-based Augmentation System (MSAS), and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS). One of the goals for these SBASs is interoperability, but the term "interoperability" has multiple meanings. This paper describes different meanings that could be ascribed to the term. Additionally, analysis and examples of various types of interoperability are presented.
