Overview
MITRE's experience and expertise span all aspects of a privacy program. While thoroughly familiar with privacy statutes and regulations, MITRE takes a broader view, going beyond compliance issues to consider the technical, operational, social, and ethical implications of designs and processes. This holistic approach helps our government sponsors to fully respond to privacy concerns, generating high levels of confidence that privacy goals are being achieved. MITRE works with government organizations to establish and maintain high-standard privacy programs that:
- Comply with the letter and spirit of privacy laws and regulations
- Build trust and respect among constituents
- Facilitate appropriate sharing of personally identifiable information (PII)
- Reduce threats to PII, e.g., identity theft and insider threat
- Align with mission objectives
- Plan and execute strategically
MITRE's privacy work leverages our unrivaled expertise in information security and risk management. In particular, MITRE's appreciation of the interrelated but distinct requirements of privacy and security enables a focus on synergy rather than tradeoffs.

Challenges Federal Agencies Face
As the amount of personally identifiable information (PII) that is shared increases, so does privacy risk. Yet, legislation has not kept pace with advances in technology. As a result, it has become increasingly important to protect the privacy of PII by developing, implementing, and maintaining effective comprehensive privacy programs within the federal government that are able to assess privacy risks while taking into account federal agencies’ missions, and manage those risks accordingly.
As operator of four federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs), MITRE has developed a unique perspective based on our over 50 years of experience working with organizations across the federal government. We have significant experience helping government organizations with operational privacy issues, and, through that work, have observed many instances where privacy efforts could be managed more effectively in the federal government.
