What Makes MITRE Different for Privacy Support?

We have provided privacy assistance to over 30 different government organizations for over 10 years. We are pioneers and leaders in the field of U.S. government privacy. Some of the characteristics of MITRE that makes our privacy support different are:

Federally-Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs): A Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) is a unique organization that assists the United States government with scientific research and analysis, development and acquisition, and/or systems engineering and integration. We manage several FFRDCs. As an FFRDC, we are uniquely positioned to provide unbiased recommendations, a broad view across agencies and the government, and conduct research in emerging areas. As an FFRDC:

  • We are chartered to work complex technical topics across agencies and among government, industry, and academia.
  • Our work is related to issues of critical national importance.
  • We operate as an independent advisor.
  • We do not have vested interest in any particular technology or solution.
  • We maintain a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing, bringing the Corporation and its body of knowledge to bear as appropriate.
  • We provide historical perspective and continuity over time and across programs, and provide an enterprise view.
  • We provide and invest in the resources, core competencies, and technical innovations necessary to meet the sponsor's needs.

Systems Engineering Expertise: Because we operate FFRDCs that are systems engineering and integration centers, we can help with privacy in systems engineering areas such as:

  • Strategic planning & analysis
  • System concepts & architecture
  • Requirements definition & specification
  • System development & acquisition support
  • System test & integration

This focus continues to enable us to help government sponsors with cutting edge work in areas such as developing privacy requirements, performing privacy testing, protecting privacy during use of live data in operational and research environments, integrating privacy into the Enterprise Architecture, and addressing privacy in the system development lifecycle.

Strategic Focus: MITRE's Privacy Strategy capability supports the unique needs of each federal agency by applying a deep understanding of privacy issues and a broad knowledge of how civilian agencies operate. MITRE's approach involves integrating privacy into strategic planning and key information processes throughout the enterprise, establishing a strong privacy office and program, and formulating an implementation strategy. To learn more about MITRE's Privacy Strategy capability, see Privacy Strategy Capability.

Extensive Operational Experience: We have helped government agencies solve operational challenges such as responding to privacy incidents, and addressing privacy issues related to areas such as data sharing and use of biometrics.

Research: We have conducted research in cutting edge areas such as privacy-enhancing technologies, privacy risk management, and tools for meeting compliance requirements such as PIAs. We help our sponsors use that research to improve their privacy programs.
