MITRE Systems Engineering Guide and Competency Model
MITRE is pleased to make available to the community two systems engineering resources that we have developed and use internally—the Systems Engineering Guide (SEG) and the Systems Engineering Competency Model (SECM).
The SEG brings together the collective wisdom of some of the most highly regarded systems engineers across the company and organizes it into an easily accessible form.
MITRE uses the SECM primarily for competency assessments (self and manager) and development activities, including an internal systems engineering curriculum. The SECM has also been the basis for the organization of the SEG.
The details of the SEG and SECM are shaped by MITRE’s role as a provider of Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) services to our government sponsors. While we believe that much in these resources is applicable to others, they should be used as references from which to develop artifacts tailored to your specific objectives and circumstances.

SE Toolkits
We have developed a set of systems engineering toolkits from our work with our customers. Each contains references and resources that can help you define, implement and execute a particular systems engineering process tailored to your program or organization. The toolkits embody best practices and lessons learned in helping our customers develop, field and sustain complex systems. The following toolkits are currently available.
More toolkits are expected to be made available in the future.
MITRE and Taylor & Francis Produce Enterprise Systems Engineering Book Series
MITRE and scientific publisher Taylor & Francis have teamed up to produce a series of books on enterprise systems engineering. The goal of the series is to further the understanding and adoption of best practices in enterprise systems engineering. Particular emphasis is given to helping systems engineers find a proper balance between people, processes, and technology. Six books have been published, some co-authored with individuals from other institutions. They include:
MITRE Contributions to Engineering Education Book
MITRE President and Chief Executive Officer Alfred Grasso and others from MITRE are among the contributors to a book published by Springer Science and Business Media titled Holistic Engineering Education: Beyond Technology. The book is "a compilation of coordinated and focused essays from world leaders in the engineering profession who are dedicated to a transformation of engineering education and practice."
