Linear Quantum Capacitance Scaling for Lanthanide and Actinide Atoms: Analysis of Two Differing Sets of Electron Affinity Predictions

ABSTRACT

Recently, there has been discussion in the literature about two new sets of values that have been predicted via theory for the electron affinities of the lanthanide elements. In addition, there have been new theoretical predictions of values for the actinide elements. In this paper, we use these new values to explore the scaling of quantum capacitances for lanthanide and actinide atoms as a function of mean radii for their outermost occupied orbitals. In the process, we analyze from a capacitance-based perspective, across the entire row of the perodic table, the two differing sets of predictions for the electron affinities of lanthanide atoms.
