New security concerns have prompted an increasing
number of temporary flight restrictions, as well as
other types of national security-related airspace restrictions,
which have resulted in thousands of violations and warnings
issued to pilots. MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation
System Development (CAASD) funded research into airspace
alerting and avoidance prototype systems, with the plan
of transferring any resulting technologies to industry
and aviation system users.
The airspace avoidance-alerting prototype system now
provides in-flight updating and enhanced situation awareness
for flight crews. This technology is expected to significantly
reduce the number and severity of restricted area violations
caused by navigational or pre-flight planning pilot
errors. |
