MITRE and UVM Researchers Find Euphoria in Vermont
A Feb. 24 article in The New York Times about the hedonometer study posits that it's an important milestone, with results that underscore the "Pollyanna hypothesis." But what's behind all the happy talk? The study, published last month in a weekly journal called Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was carried out in association with UVM-graduate and Shelburne-resident Brian Tivnan. Tivnan is an employee of The MITRE Corporation. This is a not-for-profit think tank that, among other things, manages federally funded research for the U.S. Department of Defense and Homeland Security. MITRE also operates programs for the Federal Aviation Administration and researches health systems, Dodds noted. "The hedonometer is geared toward helping with public policy."
