MITRE Systems Engineering Fellowship Program for Federal Employees

The MITRE Corporation

The MITRE Corporation is now offering a challenging, one-year systems engineering (SE) fellowship program that gives you valuable technical and hands-on experience while earning a master's degree.

With the consistent tightening of budgets and the rapid pace of technology evolution, it is imperative that the federal government has the organic skills necessary to implement creative and cost-effective solutions to problems of considerable complexity.

MITRE's Systems Engineering Fellowship offers an immersive 12-month program to enable the next generation of government technical leaders to design and sustain the systems critical to our nation's future. This one-of-a-kind program, specifically designed for exceptional junior to mid-grade government employees, integrates interdisciplinary, hands-on project and research experience at MITRE with an accelerated master’s degree in systems engineering from the University of Virginia (UVA).

The UVA Advanced Systems Engineering Master’s Degree program is fully integrated into your direct work experience at MITRE.

In the program, you’ll work side-by-side with MITRE's diverse team of systems engineering technical experts and leaders. You’ll be contributing to direct work and research projects focused on applying the principles and methods of the newest systems engineering topics to programs of national importance. Participants will have the opportunity to work on projects from among MITRE's federal government sponsors including aviation, civil systems, cybersecurity, defense and intelligence, healthcare, homeland security, and the judiciary.

The UVA Advanced Systems Engineering Master’s Degree program is fully integrated into your direct work experience at MITRE. It is designed to enable working professionals to become systems thinkers and problem solvers through a unique blend of formal education integrated with personal work experience. The Fellowship Program is located at MITRE's campus in McLean, Virginia. All UVA coursework will be delivered on site as well.

An applicant's government employer pays all costs, including salary, UVA tuition, and materials. The sponsoring employer also supports the applicant's temporary assignment to MITRE for one year. We encourage you to work with your agency’s workforce development/education managers to help secure federal funding for participation in the SE Fellowship Program.

Sponsors can also leverage the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) mobility program as a source of funding for an SE Fellow. Under the IPA, federal government employees can take temporary assignments between state and local governments, institutions of higher education, and other eligible organizations such as federally funded research and development centers.

Sponsoring agencies are invited to identify and nominate eligible employees. The planned start date for the inaugural Fellowship cohort is late August 2018. Don't delay: The deadline for applications is spring 2018, but it's never too early to secure funding!
